Global Brain, Spiral Dynamics, and Memetic Evolution: Transformation to a Higher Order Existence

Posted by forwardonline on October 11, 2007

Well, I was going to post something other than this today. As a matter of fact, I have three other posts in the works, and one that was definitely meant to “trump” this one. (That will make sense in the next few posts). However, a conversation that I was having via comments on my last post with Amie has led me to write the following. It’s an important follow-up to the “Are You Sure?” series, since the question of reality and expanding action-logics is vital to transformational development across all human domains.

First, what is the “Global Brain?” Pelton noted that, “Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was probably the first person to note that world intellectual development was changing global society in profound ways. He sensed that something, which today might be called a “global brain,” was beginning to emerge. Today, an explosion of information is occurring, and it is being fueled by advanced communications satellites, fiber-optic cables, supercomputers, and other technology. Society has moved well beyond Teilhard’s “Noosesphere” to what may be called the “Technosphere.” Many scientists and others would suggest that the resulting technocratic society is desirable, just, and ultimately good. Others disagree with such a rosy assessment. There is a good deal of evidence for both positions, since each technological development seems to have both positive and negative impacts” (p. 24). This is one way to view this concept that was originated by famed Sci-Fi writer H. G. Wells - who came up with the idea for a “World Brain” or “Wolrd Encyclopedia” that would allow for the sharing of vast amounts of human knowledge - but is by no means the strongest implication. The “Global Brain” has one of its greatest impacts when seen as a compendium or integration of human thought that directs a larger human transformation toward higher order existence. Technology is certainly speeding this type of collective thought, but it is also a by-product of social evolution as emergent world issues are seen as interconnected and causal. As Pelton added, “The evolution of this interlinked species that communicates directly with all other beings will indeed mark the beginning of an interlocked consciousness that can be called, quite simply, the Global Brain” (Ibid., p. 9).

Please don’t confuse the idea of a “Global Brain” with conformity, as such a human condition would only be transformative and creative when fostered by diversity. Without such, the GB becomes nothing more than “central control,” and all developmental and innovative growth would completely wither. However, with diversity intact, the GB suggests much more than a quantitative tool for knowledge-sharing, but rather a “new order” of existence that requires the collaboration of intellectual, spiritual, and societal growth.

One way to understand this type of social and emergent-issue evolution is through the use of Spiral Dynamics theory. Spiral Dynamics basically says that, “Hidden values flow from deep values. Spiral dynamics is the study of the emergence and patterns of deep values that mold strategists’ worldviews, form corporate mindsets, structure leader/follower relationships, establish decision structures, and define reality. Understanding deep values provides a scaffold to stand on while analyzing why people think as they do and how they are likely to think next” (Cowan, p. 4). These values are pictured as a series of connected layers or stages, moving upward in the form of a spiral. Cowan explained these stages, noting that:

“The states… described are bio-psycho-social systems that include neurology and physiology, cognitive processes and experiences, even a spiritual component. They are deep values containers; surface values and hidden values are the contents. Deep values are alive, so spiral dynamics blends the notion of a growing spiral of thinking with dynamic forces of change. Living with the problems of human existence activates built-in mind/brain systems to produce a series of evolving deep values. There are eight zones along the spiral thus far. They are designated as: beige, purple, red, blue, orange, green, yellow, and turquoise. Each is flanked by an “entering” phase, which carries some of the previous thinking forward, and an “exiting” phase, which recognizes the problems of existence coming next. Deep-values systems almost never appear alone - most of us have several of them ebbing and flowing situationally. They brighten and dim as external circumstances and internal states change. Each represents its own reality no better or worse than another, only more or less appropriate to the circumstances. Deep values emerge up the spiral and shift in focus from “me” to “we” and “inner” to “outer” (p. 4).

Hopefully this last description wasn’t too wordy; if you take the time to understand Spiral Dynamics, you will get a greater sense of how deepening our value systems and internal matrix can lead to a new order of human thought and action. This will lead us into discussing “memetic evolution” and the transformation of global synergy, helping people to move from individual spheres of thought and action to the power of the corporate!

    Frank,

I appreciate the post, it clarifies a great deal - AND I get points for messing in your life in a memorable way again! lol!

I’m all the more convinced that collective and individual is a both/and, otherwise it would not be collaboration as you’ve so beautifully described, but “Borg”. By “convinced”, I do not mean “entrenched” by the way. My ears and mind are still wide open :-).

I’ve been reading in different areas online about Ken Wilber. If you will — Do you see “Spiral Dynamics” as a truth? Do you think that it can contain errors? Do you think it’s a closed system?

  2. Frank Spencer Says:

    Amie,

I’m glad for the conversation, good stuff! I think “both/and” is a great description, and plays right into my thrist for more complexity… haha..hahaha…hahahahahahahahaha! (Maniacal laughter implied).

As for Spiral, it’s not “the” truth, it is a tool for uncovering layers of reality, ideas, values, and worldviews. It helps one to see where they are in relation to others, how “self-centered” they may be, and how to incorporate greater stages of development into their lives (all of this on a corporate or collective level as well). There are other tools that accomplish such a task on an individual as well as organizational level (such as culture change methodologies or foresight style assessments), I’m just a big fan of Spiral and the implications on Integral Thought. Why? For the very reason that it is NOT a closed system, but rather ever expanding, inclusive of the layers that have gone before (you add and grow, not simply move ahead), and cognizant of changing environments and their effect on action-logics and perceptions. The “Spiral gurus” even note that the stages themselves would theoretically have no end.

Quick plug: This helps us individually and collectively (or “both/and” as you put it), to create aspirational futures rather than beng stuck at one level of thought and action (interally and externally, spiritually, physically, emotionally, etc.) and never knowing the difference. All things must grow to produce their potential, and so must you! I appreciate the “accidents” as much as anyone (remember, I love complexity!), but many accidents are due to a lack of hindsight, insight, and foresight. It’s easy to talk about synergy, harmony, and the like when you live in the United States. But the time is upon us to truly grasp the causal nature of humanity’s relationship globally. The de-greening of northern Africa (resulting in starvation), the 178 present-day wars taking place, the mortality rate in Sudan, the genocide in Liberia and West Africa, the unfettered polution in ever-expanding China, the human-rights violations in Thailand, food production problems in India, the unchecked race toward more technological production - these all add to the direction of the World System as a whole, and they call for a human awakening that grants a different response than that which has been given by modernism, dualism (as you pointed out), unconscious capitalism, etc. This is also why I work towards a “mental map” shift in faith dynamics, just as you do, and the reason that we are now friends - a wonderful addition to my life!

    Well Frank,

I would very much enjoy sitting with you and hear more about “Spiral Dynamics” - or even a phone call would be cool.

When you shared your presentation on the ladder in “The Zone”, my children lost their minds (don’t ya love it!) and I was only 1/4 mentally present.

I would not say that you have a gift for explaining things simply - sorry, too bad! haha! Rather, I think that you have a very firm grasp - a gift for understanding. As Einstein said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” One does begat the other :-)..

    On with the blogging!

(My house is “vely scarelly” (voice of Dracula). I’m looking forward to hearing the sounds of traumatized children in a couple of weeks! lol!)

  4. Amie Says:

Oh. My. Gosh. Edit: “I would very much enjoy sitting with you and hearING more about “Spiral Dyamics -”

  5. Frank Spencer Says:

    Amie,

Wow, you’re the first one I’ve ever heard say that I do not explain things in a manner that makes the subject accessible! Even Kevin says that I make the subject of foresight something that is exciting and understandable. That’s always been one of my strong traits. However, I do think that I try to take people out of their “comfort zone,” using some language and approaches that they may not be familiar with, helping them to think in ways that they haven’t thought before.

Maybe you don’t have the gift for “grasping?” (just kidding);)

And, as far as Einstein is concerned, who was he to talk? I mean, the Theory of Relativity, are you kidding me?

Yes, the house is getting spooky! Now, to attract the unwilling victims.

    Frank

  6. Amie Says:

    Frank,

I was meaning that I see the reason for your explaining things so clearly as evidence for your gift for understanding.

Like “clarity” is a symptom of the actual underlying gift. (”One does begat the other”)

I said it somewhat in jest.

I apologize for my lack in explaining that simply - I must have had no idea what I was talking about. LOL!!

  7. forwardonline Says:

    Amie,

No need to apologize, I was joking around in return. Your comments have been much appreciated, and I hope you comment again in the future - always welcome!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, and can’t wait to hear how Halloween “goes down” at your house this year!

    Frank
